Fertility Doctor Tina Koopersmith
Discusses The Egg Fertilization Process
Once eggs and sperm are collected, the next step is egg fertilization via IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) or ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) to create an embryo.
In conventional IVF, 50,000 sperm are layered on top of one egg in an IVF lab to create an embryo in an incubator. However, with ICSI, a newer procedure, the sperm heads are directly injected into the egg, and the egg-sperm mixture is then placed in the incubator to properly fertilize. Depending on your individual situation,we may choose either IVF or ICSI or both, so it’s important to evaluate both options with your fertility specialist before making this decision.
